Kenya is world-renowned for its parks and reserves. Most are in the middle or in the East of the country. However, Western Kenya has some hidden gems when it comes to parks and reserves:
Don't think that the 'game' animals are restricted to the parks and reserves: smaller mammals, like civet, genet and mongoose, and some larger ones like hyena and even the odd leopard are still around in rural Western Kenya. However, the chances that you will see them are remote as most are nocturnal and extremely shy. Occasionally, you'll see them on the road after dark, even in towns. They have good reason to be shy because inhabitants are likely to kill them to prevent the animals from going after the poultry or livestock.
More abundant are hippo's (Lake Victoria and some rivers) and crocodiles (in some rivers and on and around some of the Lake islands). Small monkeys (like Vervet monkeys) can be found almost anywhere but tend to stay away from desely populated area's.
