People: Culture & History

Western Kenya has a lot of culture and history to learn about and to enjoy. This page can only briefly touch on some subjects. Follow the links to read more.

Culture

The area described as Western Kenya has seen a number of tribes and sub-tribes living in it for hundreds of years. Roughly in order of size: Luhya, Luo, Nandi, Gusii, Marakwet, Pokot. They all claim a part of Western Kenya as their ancestral origin (sometimes even the same part..) and . But as Kenya is growing to be a multi-tribal almalgamate of people, you'll also find Kikuyu or Kamba or Somali folks around.

Describing the cultures of all of these tribes is far beyond the scope of this website. However we can touch on a few subjects briefly, in a way that it will give you, as visitor and guest, enough background information to understand what you see on the ground and to discuss it with the local folks you meet.

History

Of course the history of the area is tied to the various tribes that live in it. Each has its own history that only merges with the others in the more recent (read: colonial) past. No written history exist from before that time, as none of the tribes used a written language. Yet it is possible to mention a few historical facts about Western Kenya.
