Kisii is a bustling trading center in the Western Highlands. Home of the Gusii people, Kisii is a small sized town with a busy and overcrowded main street. Though prosperous and hard-working, Kisii is very noisy and intimidating. The town has pretty much turned into a giant bus stop. When by private means, the narrow streets force you slowly to proceed, zigzagging along the buses and matatus.
It enjoys a profusion of excellent fruit and vegetables all year round, especially bananas and oranges. Lavishly fertile, the region gets rain all year in remarkable contrast to the semi-arid lowlands at the lake just a few kilometers away.
Kisii is also famous for its soap stone (sometimes even called Kisii-stone). The best place however for watching the carvers and making-on-the-spot purchases is Tabaka, 18 kilometers south on your way to Migori (turn-off at Nyachenga).
You'll find plenty of places to stay. Be aware, though, for the noisy Wednesdays and weekends when they have bars and discos.
Kisii is connected by good tarmac roads from Kisumu, Tanzania Kericho and Nairobi through Narok.
