Though next to nothing for the casual visitor, Kendu Bay is a charming one-street old town 500m off the Kisumu-Homa Bay road. Approached over the murram road from Oyugis, Kendu Bay offers a splendid view over its small old styled harbor and the lake.
Its local fame comes from Simbi Lake and the nearby Ondago Swamp. In June and July they are visited by thousands of flamingos, refugees from Lakes Nakuru and Elementaita.
Even without the birds, the small lake is weird. The water is 20-30m below the surrounding land and only a few kilometers from Lake Victoria itself. Apparently Simbi Lake does not have any source and its origins are somewhat mysterious. The tale of origin is about a woman who was refused to take part in a beer party. After she had left with one woman from the village who was the only one who offered her some hospitality, the hostile village was swamped by huge rains to become Simbi Lake.
From Kisumu: Ahero - Katito - Kendu Bay. From Kisii: go towards Ahero / Kisumu and turn left at Katito. All are good tarmac roads.
