Travelling through the Nandi Hills is one the most spectacular trips in Western Kenya. The steep lush green escarpment with sugar cane below and tea above is absolutely a treat. Coming from the sugarcane fields in the valley you slowly circle up into the beautiful mountains overlooking jungle-like ravines. The views over the valley are great and sometimes you can even see Lake Victoria.
Headquarters of the Nandi, a tribe that fiercely fought the British colonists, Nandi Hills is a small trading centre in the hills. It has little to offer, except for the peaceful Nandi Bears Golf Club. This old English club maintains a beautiful golf course. Overlooking the hills, the wide fairways offer spectacular views, also for non-golfers. The trees surrounding the green pastures are housing monkeys and huge owls amongst others and are well worth a walk.
You can stay at the simple self-contained cottages after having had a drink and a snack at the lovely club house, taking you back al the way to the 1930s!
A ninety minutes drive takes you first from Kisumu along the Nairobi road to Awasi crossing the rice fields in the Kanu plains. In Awasi you turn off left towards Chemelil, a major crossroads on the flat sugar lands. Chemelil boasts one of the largest roundabouts in the world, don't get lost on it! Exit it on the North side, towards the hills and Kapsabet. Beyond Chemelil, the road zigzags through high tea and coffee country to Nandi Hills. The road continues to the town of Kapsabet where it joins the road between Chavakali and Eldoret.
