Places to see in Western Kenya

Western Kenya is the 'forgotten Kenya', with few visitors or tourists coming to enjoy the sights. Yet there is so much to see!

Western Kenya has some great 'classical' tourist destinations. Not all are conveniently serviced by safari companies or scheduled airlines, but if you put in a bit of effort there is much to see. Examples? After Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, Mount Elgon is the third large volcano in East Africa, with high-altitude vegetation and all. Then there is Ruma National Park, which has some very rare antelopes. In the very heart of Western, Kakamega Forest is world famous among birding enthousiasts.

On another note, because Western Kenya has not been touched by large-scale tourism, it has not been spoiled by it. This part of Kenya is how Africa really is: with all the nice and sad aspects of that. Poverty is there, but also a rich cultural life and a strong belief in traditions, community values and support. Subsistance farming is everywhere, but high-tech companies are starting up next to them. In any case, hospitality is important to every individual in Western Kenya. This region offers the unique opportunity to see Africa as it really is now.

The area covered in this web site is roughly the one between:
- East of the Uganda border
- South of Marich Pass
- West of the Rift Valley escarpments
- West and North of the greater Masai Mara
- North of the Tanzania border
